Train Journey

I had decided to travel to my house in the far North of Sweden by train rather than take a flight for several reasons, but mostly because air travel is just too restrictive these days and I wanted to travel with my large format camera. The journey by train was far more comfortable than I have ever experienced on an aeroplane.

This image comes from the Hamburg to Denmark …

leg of the journey and I was quite pleasantly surprised to find out that we were to enter Denmark by Ferry! The train literally drove on to the Ferry just like any other vehicle. Now my journey had been severely messed up by delays from Cologne to Hamburg which meant that I missed my conection to Copenhagen in Hamburg and that gave me a two hour delay in Hamburg. However, out of adversity often comes opportunity and that was exactly the case here – the sunset was stunning and I could only have experienced it because my train had been delayed otherwise I would have made this crossing two hours earlier.

We left the train …

to go up to the passenger decks, just as you would with a car and I took the opportunity to eat some dinner, giving the sun a chance to get to a photographic point in its setting before I went out on to the open deck to shoot and I had several images with ferries at different points. This one and one other (watch out for a future post for taht image) had the balance that I was looking for in the image.

Of course, there were more delays …

in Denmark so I eventually got to my hotel at one in theĀ  morning, but I do think that the Ferry crossing by train with the incredible sunset made it all worthwhile!
